Reading Derek Walcott's "Love After Love"

Last week I read Derek Walcott’s “Love after Love”, a poem with themes of self-awareness and acceptance. As I read it over and over (it’s short) each time this line stood out:

Derek Walcott

“You will love again the stranger who was your self.”

Later that day, during my daily inventory, the line came to mind again, each half hitting a little differently. I thought of “You will love again...” when answering the Gratitude question: the more grateful I am, the more love I feel, and the more love I feel, the more grateful I am.

When I reached the Changes prompt, that line—"...the stranger who was your self"—made me wonder if the changes I’m seeking are really just a return to a truer version of myself (shades of Robert Fulghum's "All I Really Need To Know I Learned in Kindergarten").

Finally, the Relationship prompt "Can you think of any opportunities to strengthen, repair, or create a relationship?" felt different, and stirred the realization that doing a daily inventory is strengthening, repairing, and creating a new relationship with myself.

Does Walcott’s poem strike a chord with you—or remind you of something you’d forgotten bout yourself?
